Pinot NoirIt's a cliché, but no less true for that; pinot noir is the holy grail of red wine. A sod to grow and ripen, a bugger to make well, and frequently horrible to drink, it nontheless gathers disciples more passionate than those of any other variety. This is because, at its best, it's the best there is. Achingly pure, refined smells of violets, summer fruits, and autumn bonfires; lightness and fragility of body but extraordinary, almost savage intensity, concentration and length; if you have the inclination to look, this can be the most hypnotic of varieties. |
