Central Italy’s legendary wine – a light, easy drinking blend of Trebbiano and Malvasia to be enjoyed with a wide range of light foods. The legend behind the name is that a 12th century Bishop on a pilgrimage sent a runner ahead to mark the doors of inns where the wines were good with the word est (it is in Latin). When he got to Montefiascone he found Est Est Est on one door. The wine was so good the Bishop abandoned his pilgrimage.

Little-known but high quality variety from Campania in Southern Italy, from one of the region’s best producers; allegedly the variety used in Falernian, one of the most prestigious wines of the ancient world. This one got a Gold at the 2005 Decanter World Wine Awards, so it’s doing OK in modern times too! Using low fermentation temperatures, scented, zingy citrus flavours are captured that are a real joy.

Roberto Voerzio is a top producer in the region. This is a great example of the soft, juicy yet fresh savouriness that characterises this grape variety. There is intense vibrant fruit on the nose. Chianti Rufina 2005, Fattoria Selvapiana - Italy

Appeared at No.10 in Decanter magazine's Top 50 World's Best Value Wines (at £11.50. too!), and highly rated by a host of critics. Selvapiana, which was in the middle-ages property of the Bishops of Florence, has belonged since 1827 to the Giuntini family. Great place for wine tourists to visit (it is only 23 Km. north-east of Florence); one is led through the vineyards surrounding the "Fattoria". This wine possess wonderful aromas of crushed raspberries and berries follow through to a full-bodied palate with soft and silky tannins and a long, luscious berry and pepper aftertaste.

Winery:

Pio Cesare is a very reputable producer in Piedmonte. Made from Cortese, we have tasted a lot of Gavi, but this wine stands heads and shoulders above the rest. It has an attractive pear and roses nose to begin with. The wine is light yet well structured with melon, fresh apple dominates the palate. Then some lovely roses and mineral note comes out towards the finish. Who says Italians can’t make good whites?

This is Planeta's Fiano. It has become a bit of a cult favourite. 14.5% alcohol. Quite a deep colour. Lovely perfumed, aromatic nose. Peach, honey, lime, oak. It's a big wine more like a red wine in texture and structure. Full, intense aromas of grapefruit, with a limey streak,and some subtle oak on the palate. Big powerful and complex, really tangy and ripe that retains good acidity. Complex and long. It's very impressive.

Barolo 2005, Pio Cesare - Italy

Winery:

The Nebbiolo grapes used to produce the classical Barolo come from family vineyards around the village of Serralunga d’ Alba. This Barolo is produced through careful blending of grapes from different vineyards. Pio believes that the union of grapes from different vineyards makes their Barolo unique. The grapes from Serralunga give a full body, the ones from Castiglion Falletto offer an ethereal and tempting nose, and those from Monforte provide class and a refined nature. This produces a unique and inimitable wine. It has plenty of fruit character now and whilst the tannins are still strong, they are fine-grained and will quickly start to soften. It will drink increasingly well after another 3 years of ageing, but which will go a further decade or more should you wish.
